We surface outdoor areas for day nurseries, pre-schools, school nurseries and reception classes across the UK. Most early years gardens combine artificial grass (from about £40 to £60 per m2 before ground preparation), wetpour or grass mats under low equipment, and hard paths for wheeled toys. All prices exclude VAT. Small gardens can often be done over a long weekend or a closure week. Send photos and rough sizes, and we arrange a survey and quote.

Early years areas are small but busy, so price per m2 matters less than choosing the right surface for each corner.

What surfaces suit an EYFS outdoor area?

A mix suits most settings: soft surfaces where children climb, grass or artificial grass where they sit and dig, and firm paths where trikes and buggies run. Very few nurseries need one surface everywhere.

  • Artificial grass for schools and nurseries: green all year, no mud on the carpet, and can sit over a shock pad to cushion falls.
  • Wetpour: joint-free, wipe-clean and colourful, so it can carry a road layout or a number line.
  • Playground rubber mulch: a soft, bark-like look for sensory and woodland corners.
  • Grass mats: let real grass grow through while protecting it from wear.

How much does a nursery outdoor area cost per m2?

Budget roughly £40 to £85 per m2 for artificial grass and £40 to £140 for wetpour, both before VAT, on the published supplier ranges. Grass mats came in at about £22 per m2 on one dated council quote. Small areas cost more per m2 because the set-up is spread over fewer square metres, so ask for a total as well as a rate.

What fall height do low early years climbers need?

The surface must be tested to a critical fall height at least equal to the highest point a child can fall from. Low equipment needs a shallower surface: one supplier’s chart gives 40 mm of wetpour for a 1.3 m fall. Each system is tested on its own, so the team confirms depth from the test result for the product being laid. Our critical fall height guide sets out the rule.

Can sand, mud kitchens and planting sit next to safety surfaces?

Yes, with clean edges and a little planning. Sand and soil tracked onto wetpour or artificial grass wears it faster and clogs the drainage, so put a firm path or a raised edge between messy zones and soft ones. Planters and mud kitchens work best on a hard surface that can be swept and hosed.

Can the work be done without closing the nursery?

Often, if the garden can be split. The team fences off one zone at a time while children use the rest, or works across a weekend and a closure day. Wetpour needs time to cure before use, so we agree the hand-back date in the quote, not on the day.

What does the EYFS framework say about outdoor space?

The EYFS statutory framework for group and school-based providers, in force from 1 September 2026, has its own “Outdoor access” section beside its indoor space requirements. Read that section for your setting type before you design the area; the childminder version is a separate document. We build to the layout you choose and do not advise on compliance with the framework.

Which equipment and layouts work in a small garden?

Low, multi-use pieces earn their space: a small climber, a tunnel mound, a sand area and a loop for wheeled toys. Each piece of fixed equipment needs its own landing zone on a safety surface, so fewer, better-placed items often leave more room to play. If you have bought equipment already, see outdoor gym installation for fitting it.

Illustrative example

Taken only from the table above, not a real nursery. A pre-school wants 60 m2 of artificial grass and 20 m2 of wetpour under a low climber. Artificial grass at £40 to £60 per m2 comes to about £2,400 to £3,600 before ground preparation; wetpour at £40 to £140 adds about £800 to £2,800. That puts the surfacing at roughly £3,200 to £6,400 before VAT and ground works.

Who does the work

The business behind Play and Sport Surfaces is WeDo Property Services. Alex Winser is your one contact for the whole garden, and the installers lay the surfaces while Alex keeps the work around your session times.

Often needed alongside

Nurseries inside a primary school often fold the work into a school playground surfacing scheme. Public or estate play spaces for the same age group are covered on play area design. Compare every surface on safety surfacing for playgrounds, and see all rates on playground surfacing cost.

FAQs

Is artificial grass hot in summer?

It can get warmer than real grass in direct sun. Ask about shade and lighter colours when you enquire.

Can wetpour have a road or number line built in?

Yes, graphics can be poured in; each adds to the price.

Can you work around our opening hours?

Yes. Give us your session times and closure days when you enquire.

Is bonded mulch safe for under-threes?

Bonded mulch is fixed in a resin binder, unlike loose fill. Check your own risk assessment for your age group.

What do you need to quote a nursery garden?

Photos, rough measurements, the equipment you have or plan, and your closure dates.
