Play and Sport Surfaces builds garden tennis courts, half courts, children’s play areas and resin paths for homeowners across the UK. The LTA’s average for a set of four new courts is £150,000 to £200,000, which works out at about £37,500 to £50,000 a court before any private-garden extras, while play surfaces start from about £40 per m2 excluding VAT. Most garden courts need a survey of levels and drainage first, then a build in the drier months.
No official body publishes a price for one private court, so the honest starting point is the LTA’s set-of-four average, divided down.

What should a homeowner budget for a garden court?
Plan on tens of thousands of pounds per court, and more for a single court than the per-court share of a club set. The LTA’s set-of-four averages work out at about £37,500 a court for porous asphalt and £50,000 for acrylic clay, but one court carries its own set-up costs, fencing on every side and often a long route for plant through a garden. Your survey turns that into a fixed quote.
Tennis court cost breaks the price down by surface, fencing and floodlights.
Will the council need to approve a garden court?
Often for the fencing and lights, less often for the court surface itself. In England, the Planning Portal says a fence, wall or gate needs planning permission if it is over 2 m high, or over 1 m next to a highway or footpath. Floodlights, listed buildings, conservation areas and Green Belt sites raise further questions for your council.
The planning permission guide for courts and pitches sets out what usually needs an application and how long it takes.

Which surface suits a garden court?
Artificial grass, porous asphalt or acrylic, depending on how you play and how much upkeep you want. Artificial grass is forgiving and plays all year; porous asphalt is the lowest-cost surface on the LTA figures; acrylic clay gives a clay-style game at the highest price. Tennis court construction compares them.
Is a half court an option for a smaller garden?
Yes. A basketball half court or a multi-sport pad takes far less space than a full tennis court, needs less fencing and is priced on survey to your layout. See outdoor basketball court surfaces for surfaces and markings.
Could a garden padel court work instead?
For many gardens, yes, because a padel court is much smaller than a tennis court. Our sister site covers the garden padel court, from planning to the finished court.
What surface should go under a garden play frame?
One tested to the fall height of your equipment. Wetpour, bonded rubber mulch and artificial grass on a shock pad are the usual choices for gardens, and the critical fall height guide shows how depth relates to height. For a family garden, artificial grass often blends in best when the frame is low.
Can you lay resin paths in the garden?
Yes. Resin bound garden paths are firm, permeable and free of loose stones, and they connect a court or play area to the house. See resin garden path costs and options. Resin driveways are a different job handled by a separate specialist site.

Illustrative example
Built from the LTA rows only; not a real job. A homeowner compares one artificial grass court with one acrylic clay court. On the per-court share of the LTA set-of-four averages, that is about £43,750 against about £50,000, before the extra fencing, access and set-up that a single garden court carries. Planning for fencing over 2 m would be a separate step before either build starts.
Who does the work
Play and Sport Surfaces is a WeDo Property Services service. Alex Winser is your one contact from the first garden visit to handover, and the installers build the court, play area or path.
FAQs
How much garden do I need for a full tennis court?
More than the lines alone, because run-off space sits around the court. Send your plot measurements and we check the fit.
Our garden slopes. Is that a problem?
Not usually. The court is levelled with cut and fill, and the survey prices the earthworks.
Will a court damage my lawn during the build?
The access route takes heavy traffic; making good is listed on the quote.
Could we light the court in a later year?
Yes, but running the cable during the build is cheaper. Check planning first.
Do you resurface existing garden courts?
Yes. See tennis court resurfacing.
