Play and Sport Surfaces resurfaces, relines, cleans and repairs multi use games areas for schools, parish councils, clubs and housing estates across the UK. Three contractors quoting one parish council in 2025 priced a 35 mm porous resurface of a 713 m2 MUGA at £24,000 to £26,400 plus VAT, about £36 per m2, with relining from £600 per sport. Resurfacing is usually booked for a school holiday or the quieter months, after a survey of the base.
Resurfacing a sound MUGA costs a small share of building a new one, so the survey of the base is the key step.

How much does MUGA resurfacing cost?
About £36 per m2 plus VAT for a 35 mm porous multisport surface, on three real 2025 quotes. All three contractors priced the same 713 m2 court at £24,000 to £26,400 plus VAT. A court resurfaced with acrylic paint on porous macadam was estimated at £17,000 to £20,000 for another parish, rising to £37,000 to £47,000 with a cushioned layer underneath.
Base repairs, drainage and access move the final figure, so your quote follows a survey.
When does a MUGA need resurfacing rather than repair?
When the top layer is worn across the court, not just in patches. Signs are loose stones on a macadam surface, bare or flattened areas on artificial grass, faded colour you cannot repaint over, and water lying on a porous surface that should drain. Local cracks, small holes and lifted edges can be repaired; widespread wear needs a new surface.
How it works
- 01Send a plan and photosThe site, the surface and the date it must reopen.
- 02We check the groundLevels and where the water drains.
- 03Written quoteBuilt around your reopening date.
Can the existing base be reused?
Usually, if it is sound and draining. The Wickham quotes were for a new 35 mm surface, not a rebuild, which is why they come in at a small fraction of a new court. If the survey finds sinking, wide cracks running through the base or drainage failure, the base needs work first and the quote lists it separately.
How much does relining cost?
£600 per sport, or £1,250 for the whole court, on the quotes in the same Wickham pack. Relining is normally done straight after a resurface, and on its own when the lines have faded but the surface is sound. See sports court line marking for layouts and paint types.
Can the PE and sport premium pay for MUGA work?
For relining, usually yes; for resurfacing, check first. The DfE guidance allows the premium to fund maintenance of existing assets and gives repainting playground lines as its example, but it names multi-use games areas as capital and says it cannot advise on individual cases. Ask your local authority or trust before using the premium for a full resurface. The guide to funding sports and play surfaces lists other routes.
Can you repair the fencing and goals too?
Yes. Damaged mesh panels, posts, gates, goals and hoops are priced after the survey and can be done in the same visit as the resurface, so the court is closed once.
What does a MUGA inspection involve?
A look at the surface, base, drainage, lines, fencing, goals and gates, with a written note of what needs doing now and what can wait. Courts that sit within a play area may also be covered by your annual playground inspection; a stand-alone court is checked on our survey before any resurfacing quote.

Illustrative example
Built only from the Wickham figures; not our job. A school has a worn 713 m2 MUGA on a sound base and wants it resurfaced in 35 mm porous multisport and relined for football and netball. Using the three quotes and £600 per sport, its budget is about £25,200 to £27,600 plus VAT, compared with £190,000 for a new fenced, floodlit court of similar size.
Who does the work
Play and Sport Surfaces is a WeDo Property Services service. Alex Winser runs the resurface from survey to reopening, and the surfacing teams prepare the base, lay the surface and reline the court.

FAQs
How long does a MUGA resurface take?
Your quote gives the time on site once the base has been surveyed and the weather window is known.
Can you change the surface type when resurfacing?
Sometimes, but it may need base work. The survey sets out what a change involves.
Do you resurface MUGAs built by others?
Yes. The survey checks the existing build first.
Can the court stay partly open?
Rarely during resurfacing; the whole surface needs to cure.
Is VAT included in the resurfacing figures?
No. VAT is shown as its own line.
