Start here if you know the job but not the surface. Play and Sport Surfaces prices and builds MUGAs, school playgrounds, nursery gardens, play areas, markings, running tracks, artificial pitches, tennis and netball courts, cricket pitches, paths and equipment bases across the UK. Jobs run from a few hundred pounds for a marking kit to about £1.97 million for an eight-lane track, all excluding VAT. Pick your job below, or send a plan for a quote.
Every application below has its own page with a full price table, what is included and how long the work takes.

Which application page do you need?
Choose by what the space will be used for, not by the surface name. A fenced ball court for several sports is a MUGA. Rubber under a climbing frame belongs to safety surfacing. Painted games on tarmac are markings. Each page below covers one job from the buyer’s side: what it costs, what goes underneath, how long it takes and who pays.
Ball courts and pitches
- MUGA pitch: one fenced court for football, netball, basketball and tennis practice.
- Outdoor basketball court surfaces: netball, basketball and multi-sport courts, including half courts.
- Tennis court construction: new club, school and garden courts.
- Tennis court resurfacing cost: repainting, resurfacing and cushioned overlays on existing courts.
- 3G football pitch construction: 3G, sand-filled and water-based pitches for football, rugby and hockey.
- Synthetic cricket pitch: non-turf match pitches, practice cages and wicket replacement.
School and early years
- School playground surfacing: whole-yard projects across play, ball and path zones.
- EYFS outdoor area: nursery and reception gardens with low equipment.
- School playground markings: games, number grids, maps and trails.
- Daily mile track: a running loop pupils can use every day.
Tracks, lines, paths and equipment
- Running track construction: polymeric tracks, jump runways and relining.
- Tennis court marking: lines for tennis, netball, basketball and MUGAs, plus car parks.
- Play area design: parks, housing estates and holiday parks.
- Resin garden path: school, park, estate and garden paths.
- Outdoor gym installation: fitting equipment you have bought, with the surface under it.
What do the official prices include?
Sport England’s benchmarks include fencing, sports lighting, a notional allowance for external works and fees of 6% for project management, site investigation and planning. They leave out VAT, land, poor ground, difficult access, long service connections and regional differences in labour and materials. Treat them as a national starting line, not a final figure.
The smaller jobs on this page are priced from real dated quotes in council papers or from published supplier prices. Where only one source exists, the page says “from about” and lists it as low confidence, so you can see how much weight each figure carries.
How it works
- 01Send a plan and photosThe site, the surface and the date it must reopen.
- 02We check the groundLevels and where the water drains.
- 03Written quoteBuilt around your reopening date.
Can one project cover several applications?
Yes, and schools and parks often save by doing it that way. One site visit, one mobilisation of plant and one programme can take in a new MUGA, markings on the surrounding tarmac and a track round the field. Ask for each part as its own line so the quote can be split between budgets or funding bids.
Who pays for which job?
It depends on the buyer and the pot. Primary schools cannot use the PE and sport premium for capital work such as a MUGA or an active mile track, but can use it to repaint existing playground lines. Clubs look to the Football Foundation, Sport England’s Movement Fund or LTA loans. Our playground grants guide sets out what each source pays for and what it refuses.
Do courts and pitches need planning permission?
Some do. Fencing, floodlights and new hard surfaces are the parts that usually bring a project to the planning team. Read planning permission for courts and pitches before you fix a start date.
Who runs each application project?
Play and Sport Surfaces is a WeDo Property Services service. Alex Winser takes each project from first enquiry to handover, and the surfacing teams carry out the build on every application listed here.
Where are the surfaces themselves?
If you already know the material you want, the surfaces section prices wetpour, rubber mulch, artificial grass, resin and macadam by the square metre. Upkeep for finished courts and play areas sits under playground maintenance, and every price on the site is gathered on playground surfacing cost.
