This page gathers every price we use on Play and Sport Surfaces in one place, for schools, councils, clubs, parks, developers and homeowners across the UK. Play surfaces start from about £40 per m2, a fenced, floodlit MUGA is benchmarked at £190,000, a 3G training pitch at £515,000 to £545,000, and a set of four tennis courts at £150,000 to £200,000. Each line names its source, its date and how far to trust it.

Official figures exist only for the big builds; for play surfaces and repairs, real council quotes are the next best evidence.

What does playground surfacing cost per m2?

From about £40 per m2 at the low end to around £140 for wetpour, depending on depth, colour and the base. Real parish quotes put bonded rubber mulch at £60.75 and £84.39 per m2 and rubber grass mats at about £21.81. The deeper the surface needed for your equipment’s fall height, the higher the price per m2.

Each surface page has the detail: wet pour playground surface, playground rubber mulch, artificial grass for schools and rubber playground flooring.

How much do courts and pitches cost?

Courts run to six figures and pitches to seven, on the official benchmarks. See MUGA cost, 3G pitch cost and tennis court cost for each one broken down.

What do the Sport England figures include and leave out?

They include Sport England’s notional external works allowance and its 6% fees for project management, site investigation, planning and associated fees, along with the fencing and lighting named in each line. They leave out VAT, land, inflation after Q4 2025, poor ground, difficult access, long service connections, biodiversity net gain and regional cost differences. Those exclusions are where budgets tend to grow, so a survey prices them before you commit.

How far can we trust each figure?

Read the confidence column. High means an official body (Sport England or the LTA). Medium means a dated real quote in a council paper, or two sources that agree. Low means a single installer’s published range. Our written quote replaces all of them once your site has been surveyed.

Do the prices include VAT?

Mostly not, and the table says where a source does not state it. Schools, councils, clubs and companies recover VAT differently, so every quote we send shows it as a separate line.

What changes the price on every job?

Spring rider on a playground with green and beige safety surfacing

The same handful of things: the area (larger areas usually cost less per m2), the depth or build-up, the condition of the ground and base, access for plant, extras such as colours, graphics, fencing and lights, and how tight the time window is. A survey turns each of those into a priced line.

What does it cost to look after a surface?

A fraction of the build, every year. Tennis court moss treatment runs about £150 a court on the LTA’s figures, a wetpour patch was £120 for one council, and one town council reserves £12,000 a year to replace its 3G carpet. See playground maintenance for every surface.

Can grants cover part of the cost?

For community projects, sometimes; for commercial ones, rarely. The PE and sport premium cannot pay for new MUGAs or tracks but can pay for repainting lines, the Movement Fund gives £300 to £15,000, and the Football Foundation lists grants up to £25,000 for 3G pitches, fencing and floodlights. Every funder, with its limits, is set out in the guide to funding sports and play surfaces.

Illustrative example

Using only the table. A school plans a 100 m daily mile track, a repaint of its MUGA lines for two sports and a wetpour patch. The track is £6,000 to £12,000, the relining £1,200 at £600 per sport, and the patch about £120, so the budget is roughly £7,300 to £13,300 excluding VAT, before survey findings.
