We lay bonded rubber mulch for schools, nurseries, parish councils, holiday parks and developers across the UK who want a natural, bark-like play surface that stays put. Published prices run from £40 to £75 per m2, and two real quotes to a parish council came in at £60.75 and £84.39 per m2. Depth follows the fall height of your equipment. Photos and rough measurements are enough for us to book a survey.

How much does bonded rubber mulch cost per m2?

Budget £60 to £85 per m2 for an installed play area of around 150 m2, going by two real quotes; installer guides start lower, at £40. The real quotes include the whole job, so they are the better guide to what a council or school actually pays.

Quote or guide Price VAT Source

Rubber mulch average, installer guide £40 to £60 per m2; bonded “£55 per metre” not stated Soft Surfaces, May 2024

The two real quotes are from 2021, and prices have moved since, so treat them as a floor rather than a ceiling. Depth, edging and base work explain most of the gap between the two.

Bonded or loose: which is safe under equipment?

Both can be safe if they are tested and kept at the right depth, but bonded mulch is far easier to keep safe. BS EN 1177 covers loose fill such as bark and wood chip as well as bound surfaces. Loose fill, though, is kicked out of landing zones under swings and slides, so its depth has to be checked and raked back constantly. Bonded mulch is held together with a binder, so the depth you pay for stays where it was laid.

Can it go straight onto grass or mud?

No. Bonded mulch needs a firm, free-draining base, so grass and topsoil are dug out and replaced with a compacted stone sub-base first. Where there is sound tarmac or concrete already, the survey checks whether the mulch can go on top instead, which saves on dig-out.

What fall height does it meet at which depth?

Each bonded mulch product is tested separately under BS EN 1177, so the depth for a given fall height comes from that product’s own test certificate, not from a general chart. The rule is the same as for every play surface: its tested critical fall height must be at least the fall height of the tallest equipment above it. Our critical fall height guide shows how to read the certificate and check it against your equipment.

Ask any installer to put the product name, depth and critical fall height on the quote. If two quotes give different depths for the same equipment, ask why before choosing the cheaper one.

What are the downsides of rubber mulch?

The main ones are cost and upkeep. Bonded mulch costs far more than loose play bark, leaves and grit settle into its open texture and need blowing or sweeping out, and it cannot carry the crisp colours, numbers and graphics that wetpour can. Its bark-like finish is also less smooth underfoot for wheelchairs and buggies than poured rubber.

None of these rule it out. They are why many sites use mulch in one zone and a smoother surface on the main routes.

How long does it last?

There is no reliable published lifespan for bonded mulch, so judge it by the written warranty on the product and the installation. Life depends on how busy the area is, how well the edges are fixed and how quickly worn patches under swings and slide exits are repaired. Ask for patch repair prices with the quote; our wetpour repair page shows what patching and overlays cost on poured rubber, a useful yardstick.

Which colours and finishes are there?

Browns and greens that look like bark or leaf litter are the usual choice, because the point of mulch is to sit naturally among trees, timber equipment and planting. Ask for the installer’s colour range with the quote, and for a sample if the play area sits next to a building or landscape scheme with its own palette.

What goes under bonded mulch?

A compacted, free-draining stone sub-base, edged to hold the mulch in place, unless the survey finds an existing hard base it can be laid on. Water must be able to drain through the mulch and away, so any standing water on the site today needs fixing before the new surface goes down.

What’s included

  • Survey of the area, equipment, trees, levels and drainage
  • A quote naming the product, depth and critical fall height
  • Removal of old bark, grass or surface where quoted
  • Sub-base and timber, steel or concrete edging as quoted
  • Supply and laying of bonded rubber mulch
  • The product’s test details for the depth laid

What’s not included

  • VAT, shown separately
  • Tree work or root protection, unless listed
  • New drainage, unless listed
  • Moving or replacing play equipment, unless listed

Illustrative example

Using nothing but the table’s figures: a parish council wants bonded mulch across a 150 m2 woodland play area. At the two real quote rates, £60.75 and £84.39 per m2, that is about £9,100 to £12,700 before any increase since 2021. The final figure depends on the depth needed for the tallest equipment, the edging and how much ground has to be dug out.

Who does the work

Bonded mulch is mixed and laid on site by the surfacing teams. Alex Winser is your contact throughout, from the survey to checking the finished surface with you.

Often needed alongside

Mulch is often one zone of a wider scheme planned under safety surfacing for playgrounds, with wetpour on the busiest routes. To weigh the three main options side by side, read wetpour vs rubber mulch vs artificial grass.

FAQs

Is rubber mulch the same as rubber bark?

Yes. Both names describe shredded recycled rubber made to look like bark; bonded versions are glued in place.

Can you remove our loose bark first?

Yes. Dig-out and disposal of the old bark is priced as a line on the quote.

Can bonded mulch go around trees?

Often, but roots, levels and the tree’s health are checked at survey first.

Does it smell of rubber?

Ask for the product’s data sheet; makers vary, and new surfaces of any rubber type can smell for a while in hot weather.

Can it be laid on a slope?

Gentle slopes are often possible with a bonded product; the survey confirms what your gradient allows.

Do the mulch prices include VAT?

None of the sources state VAT clearly, so every quote from us shows VAT on its own line.
