We resurface, repaint and repair tennis courts for clubs, schools, parish councils, hotels and private owners across the UK. The LTA’s average cost to resurface one court runs from £12,500 for artificial grass to £17,500 for acrylic clay, and a 2024 parish estimate for porous macadam with acrylic paint was £17,000 to £20,000 excluding VAT. On a porous macadam court, the LTA’s guidance is a repaint every 5 years and a resurface every 8 to 10. Send photos of your court, and we arrange a survey and quote.

On the LTA’s figures, resurfacing one court costs roughly a third of building it new, which is why clubs plan it as routine.

How much does tennis court resurfacing cost?

About £12,500 to £17,500 a court on the LTA’s averages, depending on surface, and a dated parish estimate put a porous macadam court with acrylic paint at £17,000 to £20,000 excluding VAT. The state of the base, the number of courts and access move the final figure. For comparison, building four new courts costs £150,000 to £200,000 on the LTA’s figures; see tennis court construction.

How often does a court need resurfacing?

Every 8 to 10 years for a porous macadam court, with a repaint every 5, on the LTA’s court surfaces guidance; for artificial grass, the same guidance plans for a new carpet after about 8 years. Courts with heavy use, shade or poor drainage may need it sooner. Putting a sum aside each year means the work is planned, not an emergency closure in the middle of the season.

Repaint or resurface: which does our court need?

Repaint if the surface is sound and only the colour and lines have gone; resurface if it is cracking, lifting, losing grip or holding water. A survey tells you which. If the court is only dirty, mossy or slippery, a clean may be enough; see tennis court cleaning for those prices.

Signs that point to a resurface rather than a repaint:

  • cracks that run across the playing lines
  • patches where the surface has worn through to the base
  • standing water after rain on a porous court
  • a bounce that changes across the court

What is a cushioned overlay, and is it worth it?

It is a shock-absorbing layer laid over the existing court before the acrylic paint, giving a softer feel underfoot. It roughly doubles the cost: Great Longstone’s 2024 estimate went from £17,000 to £20,000 for a standard finish to £37,000 to £47,000 with a cushioned overlay. Clubs with older members or heavy coaching use often weigh it up.

Can we convert to multi-sport lines while resurfacing?

Yes, and resurfacing is the cheapest time to do it, because the old lines disappear anyway. Netball, mini tennis and five-a-side lines can be added in different colours. See tennis court marking for line prices.

Can a tennis court be converted to padel?

Sometimes, if the court and planning allow it. Padel courts are smaller and enclosed, so one tennis court footprint can take more than one padel court, but the cage, glass and lighting make it a different build from a resurface. Our sister business covers converting a tennis court to padel, from planning to the finished courts.

How long does resurfacing take?

Your quote gives the time on site after the survey. Weather matters: coatings need dry days and suitable temperatures, so most resurfacing is booked between spring and early autumn. Tell us the date the court must be back in play.

What’s included

  • Survey of the surface, base, drainage and fencing line
  • Quote for repainting, resurfacing or overlay, whichever the court needs
  • Base repairs as quoted
  • New surface or coatings in your colours
  • Line marking for each sport you choose
  • A check of the finished court with you

What’s not included

  • VAT, shown separately
  • Fencing, posts, nets and floodlights, unless listed
  • Full base reconstruction, unless listed
  • Drainage works found on survey, priced before they start

Illustrative example

Using the table only. A village club with one porous macadam court compares a standard resurface (£17,000 to £20,000 excluding VAT on the Great Longstone estimate) with a cushioned overlay (£37,000 to £47,000). The overlay adds roughly £20,000 to £27,000. Building a new set of four on the LTA’s porous asphalt average would be £150,000.

Who does the work

Play and Sport Surfaces is a WeDo Property Services service. Alex Winser runs your court job from survey to the first game back, and the surfacing teams repair, resurface and line it.

FAQs

Do you resurface private garden courts?

Yes, surveyed and quoted the same way as club courts.

Can we change surface type when we resurface?

Sometimes, but it may need base work; the survey sets out what is involved.

Do the LTA figures include VAT?

The LTA does not say. Our quotes show VAT on its own line.

Can a club borrow for resurfacing?

The LTA’s loan scheme prioritises covered courts and does not mention resurfacing; ask the LTA directly.

What do you need to quote a resurface?

Photos of the courts, the surface type, how many courts and how vehicles reach them.
