Essex court projects range from clubs adding courts to homeowners building one in the garden. The LTA puts a new set of four courts at £150,000 for porous asphalt to £200,000 for acrylic clay, and its average to resurface one court runs from £12,500 to £17,500 (the LTA does not say if VAT is in these figures). Play areas are priced separately, with wetpour from about £40 to £140 per m2. Send a plan and photos and the team books a survey.
| Essex court job | Typical price, ex VAT | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Four new courts for an Essex club | £150,000 to £200,000 | LTA, porous asphalt to acrylic clay |
| Resurfacing an existing court | £12,500 to £17,500 | LTA average by surface |
| Porous macadam relay with acrylic paint | £17,000 to £20,000 | Parish council estimate, 2024 |
Which council decides a court in Essex?
It depends on the address. Thurrock and Southend-on-Sea are unitary councils outside Essex County Council, so a court in Grays or Leigh-on-Sea goes to those councils, while one in Chelmsford, Brentwood or Colchester goes to the district or city council. Ask before paying for a lighting design, because fencing height and floodlights are where consent questions come up. Garden courts on Green Belt land face an extra test, explained in our planning guide for courts and pitches.
What does a public court refurbishment cost in Essex?
One recent example: Castle Point Borough Council’s £85,000 renovation, which included the courts at King George V Playing Fields on Canvey Island, reopened in July 2025 with resurfacing, repainting, new fencing, nets and gate access. The council paid for it with support from the LTA Tennis Foundation. That is a useful yardstick for a parish or town council planning a full refurbishment rather than a repaint, and the gate means courts can be booked in advance and earn small fees towards upkeep.
Should a Chelmsford or Brentwood club resurface or rebuild?
Resurface if the base is sound: the LTA’s average of £12,500 to £17,500 a court is a fraction of a new build. A survey checks for cracking, ponding and root damage before either route is recommended. Where it has failed, a full rebuild on our tennis court construction page is the honest answer, and the quote prices both so the committee can compare.
Are courts on Canvey Island and in Hadleigh short of lights?
Yes, on the council’s latest evidence. Castle Point’s Playing Pitch and Outdoor Sport Strategy, December 2025, counts 20 tennis courts on six sites, 15 open to the community and 12 with sports lighting, and finds supply falls short mainly because too few good-quality public courts are lit. It suggests exploring lights for the three courts at Hadleigh Park Lawn Tennis Club and asks providers to set up sinking funds. A club or council adding lights should price the cabling with any resurface, because lighting a court later means digging through the new surface. Our MUGA page covers lit ball courts too.

Why do Essex school pitches matter for funding?
Because funders ask for secure community use. The same Castle Point strategy names five school sites where football teams play without secure tenure, including Deanes School, Glenwood School and The Appleton School, used by 55 teams in all, and treats losing any of them as a severe blow. It also records a shortfall of two full-size 3G pitches, with one proposed at The Appleton School. A school planning a 3G pitch, a MUGA or courts that clubs will hire should agree community use in writing early, because the Football Foundation does not fund facilities closed to the community.

Can a homeowner build a garden court in Essex?
Yes, and the council you deal with depends on the address: Thurrock, Southend-on-Sea or your district. A garden court is usually one court with lighter fencing and often no lights, so it costs well below the LTA’s four-court figure; the survey sets the price from your levels, soil and access. If the garden is Green Belt land, keep fencing modest and raise any lighting with the council before ordering. Play areas can go in the same visit: if a club or school also needs wetpour under play equipment or a resurfaced yard, the survey covers it and the quote lists each job on its own line. Our costs page shows every band we work from.
Who runs an Essex job?
We arrange a vetted local surfacing contractor for Essex jobs. We confirm who within 2 working days, or tell you if we can’t. Alex Winser stays your single contact from the first call to handover, and the written quote names who does the work before anything is booked.
