This page covers two kinds of Gloucestershire project: playground markings for schools, and tennis courts for clubs, schools and homeowners. Markings are priced after a survey of the yard; a sports court reline has been quoted at £600 per sport. For courts, the LTA benchmarks a new set of four at £150,000 to £200,000 and resurfacing at £12,500 to £17,500 a court on average, without saying whether VAT is included. Send photos and Alex Winser arranges a visit.
| Gloucestershire job | Typical price, ex VAT | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Relining a games court | £600 per sport | Contractor quote to a parish, 2025 |
| Resurfacing a club court in Cheltenham or Stroud | £12,500 to £17,500 | LTA national average |
| Four new club courts | £150,000 to £200,000 | LTA, by surface |
What did Stroud budget to refurbish six park courts?
£127,670.10, mostly from the LTA. The Stratford Park scheme, put to the council’s committee in January 2023, covered resurfacing all six courts, new posts and nets, new fencing where needed, and a gate entry system on each block of two courts with central online booking. The LTA gave £115,670.10, Active Gloucestershire £5,000 and Stroud District Council £7,000. That split shows a district can fund most of a park refurbishment from the programme, while a private club or school court will be priced by us in full; see tennis court construction.
Why put a gate on each pair of courts?
So pairs can be booked and unlocked separately, as at Stratford Park. A club or school that will hire courts out should decide the gate layout at design stage, because it changes where fence panels, posts and power go.
Are school courts in Gloucester in poor shape?
Many were when last counted. Gloucester’s playing pitch strategy, covering 2015 to 2025, assessed 75 outdoor courts and rated 48% poor, with only 16% good; 28 courts, mostly at schools, were not open for community use, and the city lacked good floodlit courts for club growth. The strategy period has now ended, so a school bidding for funds should pair those findings with a fresh condition survey, which we can provide with the quote.
Does a club court need floodlights to grow?
In Gloucester, the evidence says yes. The city’s strategy found enough courts for existing demand but not enough good-quality floodlit courts for clubs to develop, so lighting, not more courts, is the gap. A club adding lights should send its power supply details and a site plan with nearby houses marked, because both shape the lighting design and any planning case.
Is there a Green Belt between Cheltenham and Gloucester?
Yes. The Cheltenham and Gloucester Green Belt covered 6,190 hectares in March 2025. A club or school on the edge of either town looking at floodlights or high fencing faces the openness test; for a straight resurface, note that the LTA’s planning note lists a change of surface or colour as needing permission; our planning guide for courts and pitches explains it.
Which council handles planning?
The district: Cheltenham, Gloucester, Stroud, Cotswold, Tewkesbury or Forest of Dean. Cotswold District Council’s 2023 playing pitch strategy says it will work with town and parish councils and clubs on local needs and back funding bids and developer contributions, so a Cotswold parish should raise its project with the district early.

Can PE and sport premium pay for school markings?
For a repaint, generally yes; gov.uk gives repainting lines as an example of what it can fund. New capital such as a MUGA cannot be paid from it. Our playground markings page explains the choices, and the MUGA page covers multi-sport courts.
What should a Gloucestershire school send?
Photos of the yard, the markings you would like, the dates the site is free, and the district. If your courts are among those not open to the community, say whether you would open them, since that can unlock funding.
Who runs a Gloucestershire job?
For a Gloucestershire job we arrange a vetted local surfacing contractor, and we confirm who within 2 working days, or tell you if we can’t. Alex Winser keeps the job moving as your one point of contact, and you see the contractor’s name on the written quote before you agree to anything.
