Markings for Leeds and West Yorkshire schools run from a one-court reline to a full yard layout. We price a layout from your yard plan, because no installer publishes a full thermoplastic price list; as a guide, relining a games court was quoted to a council at £600 per sport in 2025, and a mile track or a new court is a bigger job. See the designs on our playground markings page, then send a photo of the yard.
Can markings be laid on a cramped Leeds terrace school yard?
Yes, and that is where they earn their keep. Schools hemmed in by Victorian back-to-back streets often have one small yard, so the layout has to give each age group its own zone without blocking fire routes. Thermoplastic can be carried in by hand and laid with small kit, so a narrow gate is not a barrier, though the survey checks it.
Could we add a running track at the same time?
You could, but fund it separately from markings. Government guidance on the PE and sport premium lists active mile tracks as capital spending the premium cannot cover, while it can pay to repaint existing lines. A Wakefield or Kirklees primary planning both should budget the track from capital or a grant and the line refresh from the premium. Our daily mile tracks page covers surfaces and lengths.
What is Leeds building for grassroots football?
Two large hubs. Work started in October 2025 on the Woodhall sports hub at Calverley, with three full-size 3G pitches and a grass pitch for £9.6 million, and a second hub at Temple Newsam is due to start in 2026; senior councillors approved £23.9 million for the pair in July 2025. The funding mixes a Football Foundation grant, Leeds City Council money, section 106 contributions and private funding. For a club nearby, that changes where training will move to and which local pitches may be freed up.
Does Leeds still need more 3G pitches?
Yes, on a large scale. The Leeds Local Football Facility Plan (May 2025) counts 26 full-size 3G pitches, of which about 20 are effectively open to community football, and calls for 25 more plus replacement carpets at West Park Leeds RUFC, Leeds Rhinos’ Kirkstall training ground and Woodhouse Grove School. Named projects include three pitches at the Matthew Murray football hub and single pitches at Fearnville Leisure Centre, Brigshaw High School and Horsforth School. Across Leeds the Foundation has made 297 grants worth £22,082,208 towards £41,632,925 of projects, so it has typically paid around half. If your school’s court or field is near one of the named sites, a funding bid will start better; see artificial pitches and our MUGA page.
Is our field in the Green Belt?
If it is on the edge of Leeds, Bradford, Halifax or Huddersfield, quite possibly. The South and West Yorkshire Green Belt is one of England’s largest, at 245,870 hectares in the 2025 figures. The Green Belt test bites on new structures: a new fenced court or floodlights on a Green Belt field must show the land stays open. Our planning guide explains the test.

Which council will we be dealing with?
Leeds, Bradford, Kirklees, Calderdale or Wakefield, five separate metropolitan councils. For a school yard the landlord matters more than the planner: a council-maintained school may need sign-off from its property team, while an academy trust decides for itself. The quote names whoever must approve the work.
Do tennis and netball courts need relining too?
Every few years, yes. The LTA’s guidance for porous macadam courts is to repaint about every five years and resurface every eight to ten. If your court lines are fading but the surface is sound, relining alone is the cheap fix; see tennis courts and the bands on our costs page .
Who looks after a West Yorkshire job?
Alex Winser does, from the first call to the final walk-round. He books the survey, draws the layout with you, fixes dry-weather dates around term and checks every line before handover. The installers lay the thermoplastic or paint; any surface repair needed first is done by the surfacing teams on the same fixed written price. We arrange a vetted local surfacing contractor for West Yorkshire jobs. We confirm who within 2 working days, or tell you if we can’t.
